Roaches have plagued humankind for centuries. They can get into any home or business, and once they're in, it's remarkable how fast they can multiply. Did you know that the average female roach can have between 30 to 48 eggs in one egg sack, depending on the type of cockroach? Each female can lay up to eight egg capsules during their lifetime, resulting in about 400 roaches from just that one bug!

As we all know, roaches can be carriers of various types of diseases. In fact, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), cockroaches "are proven or suspected carriers of the organisms causing: diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, leprosy, plague, typhoid fever, and other viral diseases such as poliomyelitis."

How do these illnesses and diseases spread to us, you may wonder? One way is that cockroaches will defecate and also regurgitate saliva and digestive fluids on any food they come in contact with. This is why it is crucial that if you see or suspect roaches are infesting your home in Bamberg Sc, take action to eradicate them as quickly as possible.

This article has listed some of the top five signs of roaches in your home or business.

Egg Capsules

Roaches lay their eggs in a capsule. These egg capsules can carry up to 30 to 48 cockroaches, as we mentioned before. The German cockroach carries their eggs with them until they hatch, but other species of roaches will leave them. These capsules can be found in food cabinets, close to leaky pipes, around the base of refrigerators', in boxes, or in bathrooms. Once these capsules hatch, the empty shell is left behind.

Roach Odor

Did you know that roaches have a smell? Cockroaches can produce a musty, oily odor throughout your home or business.

If you notice an odor in your home, it's possibly an indicator of a roach infestation. There are several reasons for this. This smell can result from decaying dead roaches and comes from several species of live cockroaches too.

Dead Roaches

Not surprisingly, roaches are hard to get rid of and kill. They can't suffocate because they breathe through tiny holes along the sides of their body, and even a headless roach can live for up to three weeks! The only reason they finally die is that they can no longer ingest food or water.

Finding dead roaches in your home can also be an indicator that they are increasing in number.

Discarded Exoskeleton

Another tell-tale sign of roaches is discarded skin, also known as the exoskeleton. Cockroaches shed their skin 8-13 times before reaching adulthood.

Additionally, roach exoskeletons can actually cause allergies in humans. This can be a problem if you or a family member suffers from asthma. When cockroach exoskeletons are stepped on, they go airborne and can be breathed in, triggering asthma and allergy attacks. Cockroach allergies can even result in the development of asthma in young children.

Smear Marks

Cockroaches leave behind brown smear marks when they defecate. Typically these marks are located around the nest or in other dark, damp spaces around the home or business. Unfortunately, these bugs will then crawl over their feces, resulting in a left-behind smear. This can usually be found in high-trafficked roach areas. The odor left behind by these smears can also attract other roaches worsening the already existing problem.

Roach Sightings

Finally, one of the most obvious indicators that you have a roach infestation in your place of residence is roach sightings. Cockroaches hide in dark, humid, damp areas and typically come out at night. If you start spotting them during the day, it is a huge warning sign you have a roach infestation in your home/business.

Cockroaches usually will not come out during the day. One of the main reasons they will start to roam during the day is if the roach population is very high. This is one of the worst signs that you have an infestation, and you should seek immediate help from a pest control service.
